Safer Communities for Seniors

The Center for Elder Abuse Prevention, part of Mozaic Senior Life, opened in September 2007 to empower victims through safe haven and services, and champion safer communities for older adults. The Center is the first of its kind to serve frail elderly in Connecticut, and was only the second in the nation when it opened.

The Center’s Services

Intervention

Shelter Without Walls

In times of emergency the Center staff arranges for safe, confidential, short-term housing in its “Shelter without Walls,” with appropriate geriatric care at a location dependent on a client’s needs, regardless of ability to pay. The shelter is designed for frail, elderly abuse victims, who need emergency shelter and require levels of care that a traditional domestic violence shelter may not be able to accommodate.

Care Navigation and Victim Advocacy

Care navigators specialized in geriatrics and domestic violence victim advocacy, assist victims to detect and ameliorate geriatric conditions making them susceptible to abuse and help victim’s obtain assistance and achieve the outcomes they desire.

Prevention

Raising Awareness

Raising awareness about elder abuse among professionals and community members prevents it. The Center conducts outreach and education activities for older adults and their families, and provides professionals in a variety of fields with training about signs and symptoms of abuse, reporting requirements, and available intervention resources.

The Center’s team is happy to speak to any group about elder abuse – young and old, professional or community member.

Collaboration

Partner Agencies

Partners are essential to fulfilling our mission to help older adults. We collaborate closely with multiple community partners to link together a network of support to stop the cycle of elder abuse and to help the client live as independently as possible.

The staff works closely with local partners, academic institutions, and leaders in the field of elder abuse detection and prevention to gather insights and data. This is imperative to help prevent future abuse and build a network of safe havens for older victims.

Sharing Knowledge

The Center coordinates the Coalition for Abuse Prevention of the Elderly. A Group of professionals in Fairfield County collaborating to share insight, resources and learning together about how to help older adults in crisis. CAPE regularly hosts a multi-disciplinary team meeting to discuss challenging cases. Contact us to learn more and get CAPE emails.
